COMMUNITY SERVICES

The Pirie Information Centre, situated within the Pirie Hall in Freeland Church, is open on Monday, Tuesday and Friday mornings from 10 am to 12 noon.

Staffed by volunteers, the information centre provides a wide range of information which ranges from bus and train timetables, to theatre information, from DSS leaflets to passport forms, from further education and leisure classes to tourist information. We also produce a village information booklet which contains a list of all organisations within the area, together with contact telephone numbers, which has proved invaluable to newcomers to the village. Notice boards are also used by local groups wishing to advertise their events.

The Helping Hands scheme provides a service to the elderly and housebound in the village, whereby volunteers can assist in various small jobs about the house, but not in competition with local tradesmen.

The BRIDGE Project – open for business!

Image
Freeland Church is delighted with the progress made in realizing the vision to retain a community facility and a local post office in the village . With the community centre and the Post Office now operational it is perhaps time to celebrate the spirit of co-operation and collaborative working that, in so short a time, has enabled an opportunity to be grasped for the benefit of the village.

Background.
The Post Office in Bridge of Weir closed in May 2011. The library on the Main Street closed in the September to be moved to smart but smaller premises in the Cargill Hall.

The Community’s Response
A group of volunteers from Freeland and other local churches, the Community Council and other village organisations planned and worked together to create a community facility, The BRIDGE, in the former library.

The group leafleted the village twice and raised more than £20,000 from residents and businesses. The group have formed a charity The BRIDGE (Bridge of Weir) SCIO which is approved by OSCR and will be known as The BRIDGE.

Renfrewshire Council has leased the former library to The BRIDGE at a nominal rent and the project has been approved for LEADER grant funding. Volunteers and local businesses redecorated and refitted the premises and other volunteers restored the garden outside The BRIDGE.

Facilities now available
A small shop has been opened alongside the post office which is staffed by volunteers. An agreement has been reached with Post Office Limited for The BRIDGE to run the post office in Bridge of Weir.

The Post Office opened at 9am on Monday 28 November.

BEGINNERS YOGA AT FREELAND CHURCH

Yoga is an ancient practice originating in India over two millennia ago and is now practised world wide. Yoga combines postures, breathing, relaxation, meditation and sometimes philosophy. Today more people are turning to yoga because of its benefits. Health professionals such as doctors & chiropractors are increasingly recommending yoga to patients as an alternative or supplement to medication. It can help with physical ailments like back and neck complaints, migraine, insomnia & stress and many other conditions.

People get nervous about starting class. So here is a basic list to de-mystify yoga:
  • Choose a properly qualified Teacher.
  • You don’t need to be bendy. Yoga is suitable for all ages and sizes. A good teacher will adapt to individual needs. Check with your doctor first if you are concerned.
  • Wear loose clothing. Bring a bottle of water & blanket for relaxation.
  • Use a yoga mat, check what equipment is provided.
  • Leave about three hours after eating before practice.
  • Yoga is non-competitive. You learn to work and improve at your own level. Never compare yourself to the person on the next mat.
  • Yoga is great fun & you will see benefits !
